We're Diving into
Kindergarten!!
I am very excited about having your child in my class this year! I know
it is going to be a wonderful year for all of us. Kindergarten has
changed so much over the past few years. The state's standards have
been raised. I encourage you to get involved in your cild's academics.
Please help them daily in their handwriting, letters, sounds, and numbers.
They will greatly benefit from it.
A daily report will be sent home which identifies the skills that
were taught, your child's behavior, and upcoming events. Please
look for the colored folder each night and sign by the correct
date. Also, there will be a plastic homework bag inside the folder.
Work on anything that is in this bag each night. Return the folder
to school each day.
Please be sure that I know how your child is getting home in the
afternoons. If it is necessary to change the routine during the year,
please do so by writing a note. The office requires a written note rather
than phone calls.
The school will provide lunch for those who wish to purchase one. The
cost is $2.00 per day. You may pay for the week if it is more covenient.
Checks are made payable to K.M.S. Your child will have a designated
time for snack each day. Please send a nutritious snack and drink each
day. No glass containers or carbonated beverages may be brought to
school. Milk may be purchased from the lunchroom for 50 cents.
The Washington County School Board has an attendance policy.
Please make sure that your child is here and is on time if at all
possible. Our school day begins at 7:30 with students being tardy
at 7:45. Excessive absences could result in retention. Please make
sure you send a written excuse for any absence.
There will be many fun events that we will be involved in such as field trips,
parties, etc. If you would like to volunteer at these events or by helping in
my classroom, please do so. If you wish to have a birthday party for your
child at school, you may do so. Please let me know in advance so that I may
schedule a time that does not conflict with our extracurricular activities.
Your child will be assessed 3 times this year on FAIR (Fall, Winter, &
Spring). This tool assesses phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary,
comprehension, and oral reading. This test is about accuracy and
fluency. Please make sure you help prepare your child at home by
practicing daily with them letters and sounds. You may also use word
searches and time them for one minute to determine their score. Also,
please make sure they can identify the first sound, middle, and ending
sounds they hear in a word. Have them identify a picture that begins
with a sound you give them and then have them also produce the sound
at the beginning of a word you give them. You may also assist your
child by helping them separate the sounds they hear in a word. For
example, ask your child to tell you all of the sounds they hear in dog,
they should reply /d/, /o/, /g/ because those are all of the sounds in
the word. Also, talk with them about a story to help build their
vocabulary as well as comprehension.
Our school collects box tops throughout the year and receives 10 cents for
each box top brought. Please help us raise money for our school by clipping
box tops and sending them in each month. Your child will receive a prize for
each 10 they bring. When our class collects 300 . then we receive
freeze-pops. For more information and participating products, click on
